The Spiral Dance

Here it is: my quick and easy sundress/JSK. (Yes, I’m wearing a petticoat underneath.) Sorry it’s so dark! The coolest part is the shirred back panel; I’d been wanting to try shirring for a while and am pleased with how it turned out (so comfy!). Next time, though, I’ll probably make the elastic lines closer together since it’s a little loose.
It would be easy to lolita this up with ruffles, lace, and ribbons (and, yes, it already has a butt bow if you can’t tell). This was made out of crappy cheap poly-cotton blend, but I think it only took about 2.5-3 yards of 45” fabric, so I’ll have to make another in better fabric.
Here are the instructions I used. To make the shirred panel, I just doubled the width of the back piece, then put horizontal lines of elastic from the waistline to an inch or two below the top. (I zigzagged over elastic thread rather than sewing with the elastic thread in my machine because the latter method wasn’t gathering the fabric enough.) There is no other closure; I can just pull it on over my head this way. (So I still haven’t figured out how to install a zipper, haha.)

Did a mock-up of my combination today! This project has taught me how to sew a dart. Now I need to hit the notions and trim stores for buttons and lace. (Also, I broke down and bought a ruffler and invisible zipper foot. These will be a great help in making 1. petticoats, and 2. skirts and dresses for non-costume wear.)

omg, Victorian fancy dress ball in March! I know exactly what I’m wearing. Gotta get to work on all those 1880s underthings I now have patterns for…. (Yes, two of my Christmas presents were patterns for Victorian underwear. I have to make a combination, bustle, and at least one petticoat. A period corset will have to wait, but I have a cheap one that should work for what I want to do.)
