Recently, on my Humorless Feminist Shrew pinboard, I mentioned that modesty standards for women’s attire contribute to the rape culture. The man I’d repinned commented that he took this to mean I’d called him a rapist, and he was not a rapist, therefore feminism was wrong, etc. We’ve all heard this particular argument before.
But I happened to be thinking about Jurassic Park at the time, and realized it’s a near-perfect illustration of the difference between being a rapist and contributing to rape culture, which anti-feminists so often like to gloss over.
And now we get to talk about Dennis Nedry.
Dennis Nedry is not a velociraptor. He is a programmer, and he certainly has his faults, but he did not actually mutilate nor devour anyone on Isla Nublar. His actions, however, certainly made it much easier for the velociraptors to devour many people, including Samuel L. Jackson and the glorious Robert Muldoon.
Bonus point: velociraptors will attack anyone vulnerable, regardless of how that person is clothed.
In sum: rape culture means that you help shut down the fences that keep us safe from predators. Don’t be That Guy.
When a girl tells you if you were the last man on earth she wouldn’t have sex with you, whisper: “Who would stop me?”. It shuts her up fast.
Meet Paul, y’all! I think this little aspiring rapist deserves to have his information and his photo…

TW RAPE AND VIOLENCE
“I just wanted to say to him:
If its ok for you to rape me because I was dressed like a ‘slut/skank/ho/whore’; then is it ok for me to shoot/stab/maim/kill you because you are a male who looks threatening? Aren’t you asking for it?”Seriously you guys walking round in big drunken groups, wearing tshirts that show off your muscles that could potentially pin me to a wall, being rowdy at the back of the almost empty 10.20pm bus and making the space around you feel less safe for anyone who is not a white cis man - if I pull out a knife and stab every last one of you “I’m entitled to every inch of space around me” fuckers it’s fine because you were totally asking for it because the way you’re acting and looking fits right into my ideas of a man who could potentially damage me or other women. What do you expect walking around acting like you could hurt someone at the drop of a hat? It’s your fault, I can’t help myself when I see a potential threat, it’s just nature. If you don’t want to be stabbed for looking threatening then cover up, wear something baggy to hide your muscular body, walk around by yourself so you’re less intimidating and keep your head down when I walk past so I don’t think you’re going to target me.
… THIS. This is brilliant.

When somebody says, “I don’t think women should be raped for wearing short skirts, but what do they expect when they do go out like that?” what you are actually saying is that if a woman in a short skirt is raped, you will be less likely to hold her rapist culpable. Which makes a woman in a short skirt really appealing to a rapist. That’s something that you did. That’s not something the woman in the short skirt did, or something the rapist did. You made that woman a more comfortable target by making it clear that if she got raped, you would be less upset about it, less willing to see the rapist go to jail, less willing to support the woman. A woman is not increasing her risk of being raped by wearing a short skirt. You are increasing her risk of being raped by saying that women who get raped in short skirts should have expected that. Rapists hear you say that. By only raping the women that bystanders agree should be raped, a rapist reduces his chance of being caught and, if caught, punished. And that is why he will pick those women, over and over again, not because there is something more appealingly rapeable about them — they have what any woman has, as far as rape goes — but because he will be less likely to be held culpable for his actions.
