Drawing of Improvements in Hoop Skirts, 04/02/1861
Shelby, this will be of interest to you.
Awesome! I sense that one day I will have to make a Civil War-era dress…if only so I can go to the Civil War balls.
So many ruffles….
Did a mock-up of my combination today! This project has taught me how to sew a dart. Now I need to hit the notions and trim stores for buttons and lace. (Also, I broke down and bought a ruffler and invisible zipper foot. These will be a great help in making 1. petticoats, and 2. skirts and dresses for non-costume wear.)
omg, Victorian fancy dress ball in March! I know exactly what I’m wearing. Gotta get to work on all those 1880s underthings I now have patterns for…. (Yes, two of my Christmas presents were patterns for Victorian underwear. I have to make a combination, bustle, and at least one petticoat. A period corset will have to wait, but I have a cheap one that should work for what I want to do.)
Now that I’ve actually read Persuasion, I have to say the portrayal of Anne in the 1995 movie is a bit too mousey. That said, I cannot resist a man in uniform—particularly historical uniform!—so this remains probably my favorite Austen. (Also, I loooove the spencer she wears in the scenes in Bath. Ah, another addition to my “to-sew” list.)
(I’m sure I’ve seen the 2007 version, but I cannot remember any of it…aside from Tony Head, of course.)
LOVE this. Why every romance hero should carry a knife.
Yeah, I was reading one recently where the hero kept pulling down the front of the heroine’s corset to pop her breasts out and it irritated me to no end. (Also, where can I get a job demonstrating historical underwear to romance novelists? Sounds awesome.)

This movie appears to combine two of my favorite things: costume dramas and sex toys. I MUST SEE IT.
Also, I really want to make some trousers out of this fabric.

I need to start incorporating horses into costume events.
