The Spiral Dance

"Though both are bound in the spiral dance, I would rather be a cyborg than a goddess." - Donna Haraway

In a long New York Times feature about George Lucas, the producer and director talks about his relationship with his current girlfriend:

“If you’re more beautiful than I am and smarter than I am and you’ll put up with me, that’s all it takes. I’m there.”

Boy, do I hear him.

John Scalzi, Something on Which George Lucas and I Agree

So what I’m getting from this is that women just have to go after guys uglier and stupider than them and then they’ve got it made? Well, that kind of sucks for us. (Naturally, the comments are full of other dudes chiming in that their situations are the same. Great, so all the mediocre guys are taken by beautiful, smart women…which leaves what for the rest of us?)

If, on the other hand, these statements just mean that George Lucas and John Scalzi have low self-esteem, I’m okay with that.

Filed under george lucas john scalzi it's the old putting-women-on-a-pedestal context that makes this so irritating
