Saw UP for the first time recently
And I have mixed feelings. It was visually lovely and entertaining, but for something that seemed to get a lot of hype for being different, it was remarkably conventional. In particular, I was pretty disappointed that the one female character’s great adventure in life was her marriage. ‘Cause nothing is more important in a woman’s life than her man, amiright, ladies?? ETA: Okay, there was a...

The worst part
…about having a stomach virus over the holidays is missing all the delicious holiday food. I suppose you could say at least it has reversed my usual holiday weight-gain trend, but holy crap it is not worth it. Good thing I’m not flying for another two days; stomach still iffy. Should not have eaten that delicious brunch this morning, arrrrrgh.

Thanks, Santa
Guess what I got for Xmas? A stomach virus! Don’t think I can manage airplanes tomorrow (and it looks like there’ll be a blizzard in NYC anyway). Probably flying back Monday after all.

Oh my god, somebody make it stop. I don’t think I can take 3 more days of this “vacation.” clutches bottle of rum At least I have some good drugs for the trip home. (Note: legal, doctor-prescribed drugs. No need to call the narcs.)

I lied and told everyone I was going to my parents’ room to take a nap, when really I just wanted to be left alone to read for a bit. And now my mom’s bugging me about not sleeping. Also, the 5-year-old keeps saying he wants to take a nap with me. Nooooooo!!!!!

Is this hell?
There are spiders everywhere, the small child won’t stop harassing me, and now I have a cold. Kill me now.

Bodice Rippers Without the Bodice: Ten... →
!! Four of these are four of my favorite titles, too!* Another one I liked a lot, and most of the others are on my wishlist. Excellent choices, Library Journal! (Although: “the slash fiction genre of the 1990s”? Okay, that’s probably when it got popular, but it’s been around at least since the 70s….) *In case you care, these are: The Tin Star (even though I...

music, life, etc.: your data is only worth as much... →
And shutting down del.icio.us is arguably a far bigger story because what it effectively says to everyone using a hosted data service is this: your data is only worth as much as our ability to monetize it. This, of course, makes sense to business. But the story that’s being sold to all of us on the user side, including the many businesses being pushed to move to the cloud and trust that...

– Sam McPheeters, writing on Huffington Post about the downsides of the Wikileaks story. As the singer for Born Against, McPheeters was one of my hardcore idols when I was a teenager. He continues to think critically and speak publicly in a way that earns my respect just as much as lyrics to songs...

Is Your E-Book Reading Up On You? →
Yes, yes, yes! Spread the word, NPR. As I’ve said many times before, this is one of the reasons I avoid Kindle, iBooks, Google eBooks, etc. Now I wonder if I should switch from Stanza to FBReader. Stanza was bought by Amazon, after all….

– From a comment by XyzzyAvatar on the Salon article “Why we love bad writing” I think this is a good way of putting it. Some people prefer to linger over convoluted language and enjoy puzzling through each sentence, while others prioritize interesting characters and plot (not that the...

Reading in the Digital Age, or, Reading How We’ve... →
Okay, I’m trying to get past my knee-jerk horror of the term “social reading.” (This is not helped by people calling solitary reading “selfish reading”—thanks a lot, guys.) Here is where I am coming from: I hate being read to (either in person or by audiobook). I hate being told what to read (whether in an English class or a book club). I don’t...

Google eBooks launched today. However, I, personally, do not see any reason to use it. At the moment, I only have one problem with my current ebook storage and reading system: - Transferring purchased books to my library is onerous (it takes at least 3 separate steps, 3 programs, and invariably involves some correcting of metadata) However, the benefits of my current system far outweigh that...

Waking Up From the Pill →
This entire article is sheer scare-tactics and thinly-veiled misogyny. Does this sound familiar? “Don’t be promiscuous, girls, or you won’t be able to have kids!” How about “Feminism has made women into aging, pathetic, desperate half-females!” (Since what is the female-ness if not the ability to have children?) There are a billion other reasons women these...
